Murray State's first OVC basketball game

The Ohio Valley Conference began play in the fall of 1948 with Murray State joined by Eastern Kentucky, Evansville, Louisville, Marshall, Morehead State, Tennessee Tech and Western Kentucky in the new league.

Murray State's first basketball game against a new league opponent was on Dec. 11, 1948, against Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, a 75-58 victory for the Thoroughbreds. Murray State would play Tech again, on Jan. 13, 1949, in Murray, a 67-53 MSC victory. But final official OVC records show Tech with only one conference game for the 1948-49 season, a loss. Murray State's other games against OVC schools of 1948 are all accounted for in the final record but apparently only one of the Tech games counted.

So which game against Tech counted? According to newspaper accounts, it must have been the Jan. 13 contest. That's because the Associated Press account of Murray's Jan. 8, 1949, game against Eastern Kentucky mentions, "This was Murray's first Ohio Valley Conference game. ..."

If so, that means Murray State's first official OVC game came on Jan. 8, 1949, at home against Eastern Kentucky, a 65-42 win for the Colonels.
